Iman. Her first assignment was for American “Vogue” in 1976. She was a big success in the modeling world and was the muse for many designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Donna Karen and Versace. Iman continues to be successful, and relevant in today’s fashion and beauty industry. In 1994 she launched Iman Cosmetics, which is a line exclusively for women of color.

Born on December 4th (my fellow Savage sag) Rapper Jay-Z allegedly developed his stage name as a reference to New York's J/Z subway lines that have a stop in his Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, neighborhood. HAWT BLACK MODEL FACT ~ Dorothea Towles

Born in Texarcana in 1922, gorgeous Dorothea Towles was the first top black model to work in Paris. As a teen, she modeled exclusively for black magazines Stateside—but during a two-month vacation to Paris in 1949, she was discovered by Christian Dior, and embarked on a wildly successful career as one of the most celebrated models in Europe.

Born in Jamaica in 1948, Grace Jones took the modeling world by storm as a fabulously androgynous 1970s supermodel—but soon, her unforgettable voice took center stage. Inspired by everything from David Bowie to reggae, Jones became a dance music diva, releasing albums like “Nightclubbing” and “Slave to the Rhythm.” Her to-the-max personal style made her a muse to the most exciting artists of the era.

HAWT BLACK FACT ~ David Crosthwait Jr.

African-American mechanical engineer, David Crosthwait Jr. created the heating systems for the Rockefeller Center and New York's Radio City Music Hall.

David Crosthwait was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He received a Bachelor of Science degree (1913) and a Master of Engineering degree (1920) from Purdue University and honorary doctoral degree in 1975. Crosthwait was an expert on heat transfer, air ventilation and central air conditioning. He was the author of a manual on heating and cooling with water and guides, standards, and codes that dealt with heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. During the 1920s and 30s, he invented an improved boiler, a new thermostat control and a new differential vacuum pump, all more effective for the heating systems in larger buildings.

HAWT BLACK MODEL FACT ~ Naomi Campbell

This Jamaican-English catwalk queen is arguably the greatest Black supermodel on the planet. Soon after a fifteen-year-old Campbell was “discovered” while shopping in London’s Covent Garden, she landed the April 1986 cover of Elle. Two years later, she became the first black model to grace the cover of Paris Vogue—but only after Yves St. Laurent threatened to withdraw his advertising after it refused to place Campbell, or any black model, on the pages (how much do we love YSL?). The rest, as they say is “herstory.”

HAWT BLACK FACT ~ Henry Blair

Henry Brown created what is now known as a "strongbox", a metal container to store money and important papers that could be locked with a key. He developed a lockable, forged-metal container, divided into compartments, and patented his invention on November 2, 1886.

HAWT BLACK FACT ~ Thomas Jennings

Slaves were prohibited from receiving patents on their inventions. Although free Black inventors were legally able to receive patents, most did not. Some feared that recognition and most likely the prejudice that would come with it would destroy their livelihoods.

Thomas Jennings, born in 1791, is believed to have been the first Black inventor to receive a patent for an invention. He was 30 years old when he was granted a patent for a dry cleaning process known as "Dry Scouring". He received his patent on March 2, 1821. Jennings was a free tradesman and operated a dry cleaning business in New York City. His income went mostly to his abolitionist activities. In 1831, he became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA.

HAWT BLACK FACT ~ Madam CJ Walker

Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Walker, better known as Madame CJ Walker, together with Marjorie Joyner revolutionized the hair care and cosmetics industry for African American women early in the 20th century.
Eventually, her products formed the basis of a thriving national corporation employing at one point over 3,000 people. Her Walker System, which included a broad offering of cosmetics, licensed Walker Agents, and Walker Schools offered meaningful employment and personal growth to thousands of Black women. Madame Walker’s aggressive marketing strategy combined with relentless ambition led her to be labeled as the first known African-American woman to become a self-made millionaire.
